Capacitors in Series

When capacitors are connected in series, see the figure below, the equivalent (replacement ) capacitance is given by

        1/Ceq = 1/C1 + 1/C2 + 1/C3 + …

NOTE:  For capacitors connected in series:

 (1) the charges on all capacitors in series are equal

         q1 = q2 = q3 = …    and

(2) the voltage change across the entire leg is the sum of the voltage changes across all of the series capacitors
